The History Behind Our
Group
By Wendi Miller
PTSG President
In
1995, a group of Transsexuals began to meet for support, and community
uplift. PTSG (TSG in those days) grew rapidly. Then, in 1997, PTSG
successfully lobbied for an ordinance preventing discrimination on the
basis of gender in the city of Pittsburgh. This bill was a great
advancement for the regional transgendered community and marked a
precedent in Pennsylvania.
More recently, a new group of pre-op
transsexuals have joined PTSG and the organization is growing rapidly in
strength and vitality. Some of our future plans include hosting a
statewide Conference on Transgenderism, and to increase community
awareness
of Transgendered and GLBT issues.
Our group now
includes pre and post-op Transsexuals, Transgenderists, Cross-dressers and
Significant Others. Our recent growth spurt has caused our numbers to
swell to well over 40 individuals. In addition, we have had many other
GLBT persons contact us through our Thursday outreach efforts. Although we
emphasize Transsexuality, we
welcome any interested party from the
GLBT community.
Clearly, PTSG is an organization on the move.
